1. Is it okay for me to donate artwork to such auction events where the highest bidder gets the artwork, and the money would go to charity…people are donating money to charity to get something in return?

2. Is it permissible to sell a product and have the money go directly (without auction etc) to a charitable cause?


In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

1. Firstly, buying and selling via an auction is perfectly permissible and acceptable, in the perspective of Shari’ah and most definitely, donating one’s wealth towards charitable causes is highly-encouraged in Islam. The only noteworthy points in this specific scenario are regarding the intention and reward of the parties involved in the charity auction.

Firstly, for you (the artist) to donate the art-work to a charitable cause is highly-praiseworthy. If you donate this item with the sincere intention of assisting the poor/needy for the sake of Allah, this noble donation will be rewarded accordingly. In addition to this, it is hoped that the higher the bid for your donated item, the more reward you shall gain in the hereafter.

On the other hand, in regards to the actual bidder (buyer) of the item – in this case, the art-piece – one’s primary intention should be to assist the poor, for the sake of Allah. Only in this case, will the donation/bid for the item be deemed rewarding.

The example of this matter is the indication of our pious elders and jurists such as Shaykh al-Ḥadīth Mawlānā Muḥammad Zakariyyā Kāndhelwī (d. 1402h/1982) who indicate that when one is in the Holy lands & they purchase anything with the intention of helping the merchants of Makkah, then, although their wealth is actually spent in fulfilling one’s own needs, the money spent contributes towards the needy ones of the Holy Lands. He then narrates regarding the habit of Mawlānā Khalil Aḥmed Sahāranpūri (d.1346h/1927) on his visits to the Holy lands. When somebody used to present him with any gift, he would initially refuse to accept. Should the person persist, he would then advise them on the virtue & reward of giving that same gift to the needy ones of the Haramain. However, should the giver still persist, Hazrat would then accept it, sending Shaykh Zakariyyā to buy something from the local markets (Makkah/Madinah), so that some form of assistance be provided to the local merchants.

2. This is totally permissible and once again, very praiseworthy with the correct intention, as outlined above.

عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم -:  «من تصدق بعدل تمرة من كسب طيب – ولا يقبل الله إلا الطيب – فإن الله يتقبلها بيمينه ثم يربيها لصاحبها كما يربي أحدكم فلوه حتى تكون مثل الجبل» . رواه البخاري (١٤١٠ )- اه

وقال ابن نجيم في الأشباه (ص٧١، دار الفكر): لا ثواب الا بالنية، انتهى. وقال الپیری زاده في عمدة ذوي البصائر (١/٦٨): حقيقة الصدقة يستلزم النية ، إذ هي دففع المال إلى الفقير على وجه القربة. انتهى

قال الملا علي قاري في المرقاة (٤/١٣٣٣): هي ما يخرجه الإنسان من ماله على وجه القربة واجبا كان أو تطوعا سميت بذلك ; لأنها تنبئ عن صدق رغبة صاحبها في مراتب الجنات أو تدل على تحقيق تصديق صاحبها في إظهار الإيمان. انتهى. وراجع فضائل الحج للشيخ زكريا الكاندهلوي (ج٢ ص٢٢ ، رحمانية). والله أعلم
