Question(s)

I’ve heard of opinions stating home insurance and content insurance aren’t permissible? What is the ruling on this in our madhab?

Answer(s)

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Conventional Insurance typically consists of interest [1], gambling [2] and excessive uncertainty (Gharar) [3], all of which is prohibited in Islam.

Thus, the default position in relation to house insurance and content insurance is impermissibility, due to the prohibited elements therein.

Nonetheless, if there is a genuine need, whereby one is situated in such circumstances (eg. riots or unrest etc), where there is a major risk of his property being damaged, leading to major losses, then, as a last resort, one may take such insurance, where are no other Halal alternatives. [4]

Finally, if a suitable and viable Shari’ah-compliant model is developed, it will be necessary to avoid the conventional model.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.
