Can you make Dua’ of forgiveness for the one who commits suicide?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible to seek forgiveness on behalf of the one who has committed suicide. There is high hope from the Almighty of his forgiveness. [1]

Nonetheless, it must be noted that often, people take their lives due to deteriorating mental health or other external pressures; sometimes the death is almost accidental when one had intended self-harm. Thus, as a human being, and more so as a Muslim, one should be sensitive to such matters and avoid speculating, so as to cause distress to the family of the deceased. [2]

Insha’Allah, we will have a related query on performing Janazah Salah for such a person published promptly.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.

[Sahih Muslim, 116]

[Al-Mufhim, Qurtubi, 1/324, Dār Ibn Kathīr]

[Sharh al-Mishkāt lil Tībi, 8/2458, Riyādh][Mirqāt al-Mafātih, Mulla Ali Qari, 6/2263, Dār al-Fikr]

[Lamāt al-Tanqīh, Abdul Haq Dehlawi, 6/278, Dār al-Nawādir]
