Question(s):
A girl has health issues that require physiotherapy. The GP has said that the waiting list to see a physio is very long (few months). Privately seeing a physio will cost at least £40 a session which she is unable to afford. If she takes out health insurance for just two months, it will provide her with an initial consultation which will determine what the problem is. It will also cover 6-8 sessions of physiotherapy. This will cost £20 a month. Is it permissible to take this health insurance out for this period?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The default position in relation to medical insurance is impermissibility, due to the prohibited elements therein. [1]

Nonetheless, if there is a genuine need, whereby there is significant harm to one’s health and one is genuinely unable to afford private medical treatment, then taking such medical insurance will be permitted, based on need. [2]
