Question

Is it permissible to get a cat neutered, which stops the female cat from becoming pregnant and the male cat from making female cats pregnant? My question is for a female cat in specific.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

What is Neutering?
Neutering a male cat consists of removing the testes – known as Castration.
Neutering a female consists of the removal of the ovaries and uterus – known as Spaying. [Refer to notes below]

Shari’ Ruling:
There are various reasons to neuter (castrate or spay) cats. [Refer to notes below]

Thus, such reasons will be assessed, before a ruling can apply. Accordingly, there are two possible scenarios:

  1. There is a benefit gained or harm averted in neutering the cat
    Example: Castration is beneficial and practically endorsed by Shariah in the case of domesticated animals such as sheep and cattle etc. Castrating these animals enhances the growth and wholesomeness of the animal’s meat. [For further reasons, visit the site in the notes below]
    Ruling: It is permissible to do so [1] – A specialist should be consulted to avoid causing any unnecessary distress to the animal.
  2. If there is no benefit gained nor is there harm averted in neutering the cat
    Ruling: It is impermissible to do so. This is tantamount to causing unnecessary harm to the animal, which is impermissible in Shari’ah. [2]

سوال: جانور جیسے بیل بھینسا بکرا کتا وغیرہ کو لوگ بدھیا کرتے ہے، تو ایسا کرنا جائز ہی یا نہیں؟
