Question(s)

There are these certain shoes that are very popular amongst so many Muslims because they are very comfortable, some are the vegan version and some have a pigskin insole (the website says it’s definitely leather from pig). We have a few queries in this regard:
1) If someone had bought the pig version is it and they wear another sole on top of it is that ok? When praying salah they don’t have to change their socks etc?

2) If the pigskin shoes get wet, is it possible that the moisture from the pig can still get onto your sock even though there’s another sole in between? Should a person change socks just in case, or is it not necessary?

3) If a person washes these shoes, and the pigskin water travels all across the rest of the shoe, does the rest of the shoe become najis? Should the shoes not be used after this? Or is it ok if you allow them to dry completely then continue to wear them with another insole?

4) Will it be necessary to remove the pig part and wash the shoe again or is it ok? We are not sure if it’s possible to remove the pigskin part (the entire shoe may become damaged by doing so)

Answer(s)

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Before addressing your specific queries, a few noteworthy points should be considered:
1. In principle, the pig and all of its by-products are impure (Najis al-Ayn) and cannot be purified in any way. [1]
2. It is not permissible to wear shoes or clothing from pigskin. [2]
3. Merely touching pig-skin will not make one’s hand (or feet) impure, rather it will be deemed impure, only if one’s hand/feet or the pigskin itself was moist. [3]

Accordingly, we now address your specific queries:
1) If the pigskin shoes and one’s feet are dry, then after removing the shoes, there is no need to change one’s socks. One’s Salah will be valid in this state.

2) If the pigskin shoes or one’s feet were wet, one should change their socks.

3) If the shoes are washed thrice and each time, they are left such that the water drops stop dripping, the rest of the shoe (ie. other than the pigskin) will not remain impure. The pigskin portion will always remain impure. Thus, you may use the shoes with another insole. [4]

4) If it is possible to remove the pigskin without difficulty or there are alternative shoes available, this is preferred. Nonetheless, once the shoes are washed and dried thrice, the rest of the shoe will not remain impure; there will be no need to wash the shoes again, unless the feet/shoes get moist once again, as outlined above.

Finally, as detailed above, It is impermissible to use clothing made from pigskin. There are many shoes without pigskin in modern times, thus, these should be worn instead of those containing pigskin.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.

[Al-Mabsūt, 1/202, Dār al-Ma’rifah]
