Eyelash extensions are glued onto the existing eyelashes, not the skin. They last for about 6 weeks. A sister saw the article and wore eyelash extensions. But because they are glued to the original eyelashes, this means that part of the original eyelashes aren’t washed when doing wudhu and ghusl. My question is:
1. Does the eyelashes have to be washed when doing wudhu/ghusl or is washing the eyelid enough.
2. Will she have to repeat all the salaah she prayed whilst having these extensions (if her wudhu wasn’t valid)
3. If there’s a few weeks left till the eyelashes fall out and she can’t remove them, what should she do (in terms of doing wudhu and reading namaaz).

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1) In principle, it is obligatory to wash every part of the face from the tip of the forehead to the chin and from one earlobe to the other. Thus, the eyelashes must also be washed when performing Wudhu/Ghusl and it is not enough to wash the eyelid only. [1]

2) In principle, if her Wudhu is deemed invalid, each Salāh she has missed, she will be required to make up for it, regardless of the number of Salāh accumulated. She may exclude any days in the state of menses etc. [2]

3) It has come to our attention that there are different types of eyelashes. Accordingly, if it is possible to remove the eyelashes, the various methods of removal should be explored and adopted in a safe manner. However, in the scenario in question, based on our consultation with cosmetic experts, it seems like the eyelashes are semi-permanent (‘Russian Eyelashes’). We have been informed that it is very difficult to remove such eyelashes and this requires professional help, which is often quite costly. [3]

Thus, if this is indeed the case, it will be considered whether one was aware of the eyelashes being difficult to remove and possible hinderance to Wudhu/Ghusl etc. Now, there are two possibilities:
1. If one genuinely had no idea that this would occur, then in such a scenario, one will be deemed excused. Accordingly, one’s Wudhu’ will be valid if all the other conditions & obligatory acts are fulfilled. [4]

2. Nonetheless, if one was aware before applying the extensions that this would occur, then one must make up the Salāh she has missed, based on number 2 above. [5]

Finally, the aforementioned points are with regards to Wudhu/Ghusl in this scenario and is notwithstanding that such semi-permanent means should be avoided, especially when they are merely for beautification. [6]

Note: The concession provided in the scenario in question is circumstantial due to need and generally, removable fake eyelashes etc. may also act as a barrier for Wudhu/Ghusl and thus, must be removed.

In essence, changing the creation of Allah (Taghyīr Bi Khalqillah) can be defined as: The addition or removal of something to/from a body part for cosmetic purposes in such a way that the addition or removal becomes permanent and it seems that the individual was born in this way. Although the Eyelash Extensions in question are semi-permanent rather than completely permanent, they should still be avoided as they seek to deceive with false beauty. Accordingly, in general circumstances, to have such changes made unnecessarily, for increase of beautification is prohibited. Finally, it must be emphasised that the concession provided in the scenario in question is circumstantial, due to need and generally, such fake eyelashes may also act as a barrier for Wudhu/Ghusl etc, as demonstrated.

“There a number of different fake eyelashes. The oldest are eyelash strips. These are glued to the skin of upper eyelid near the eyelashes. They last a day and can be removed with warm water. Sometimes they fall off on their own, if the glue is not strong. The next are individual small bunches of eyelashes that are glued on as small bunches onto the eyelashes. These last 2-3 days from application. Often, they need a solution to take them off, or occasionally when women try remove them forcibly, their eyelashes can be pulled with them.

The eyelashes in question are likely Russian eyelashes. These eyelashes last for as long as the life of the eyelash, and eyelashes have a life of 42 days. They can only be removed with a solution. They cannot be removed at home. If anyone tries, they end up pulling their eyelashes out.
