I’m asking for someone else who doesn’t understand the madhabs properly. I tried to explain it to them but they are asking do they have to follow a madhab? They’re asking if they can follow majority and is there a sin if you follow the rulings according to different imams?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

This is a very detailed discussion that requires quite some explaining. We advise you to consult local scholars, who you can speak to in person.

Nonetheless, at present, you may refer to the following books for an in-depth understanding of the issue of Taqleed & following a particular Madhab. It is hoped that a careful reading of these works/writings will help understand this particular issue.

1) ‘The legal status of following a Madhab’ by Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani (May Allah preserve him).

2) ‘Differences of the Imams’ by Mawlana Zakariyyah Kandhalwi (May Allah Ta’ala shower His mercy upon him).

3) ‘The obligation of adhering to a single madhhab in all its rulings’ by Mufti Zameelur Rahman (May Allah preserve him).

4) ‘Fiqh al-Imam’ – (especially Part 1) by Mufti Abdurrahman Mangera (May Allah preserve him).

Note: PDFs of some of these works may be found online.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.
(Mufti) Mubasshir Talha – May Allah pardon him
