Question(s):
If during menses, a woman had nail polish on and removed it before ghusl, later on, she found out that a tiny bit was left on all of the nails; will the ghusl and Salah they prayed at that time count?

Answer(s):

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, it is necessary for water to come in contact with the nails. [1]

Accordingly, if after praying Salah, impermeable nail polish was found on the nails, the Ghusl and Salah(s) will be invalid. The nail polish must be removed; thereafter, Ghusl and Salah(s) must be repeated. [2]

Finally, it must be noted that in recent years, various brands have emerged with claims of ‘Halal nail polish’ or ‘breathable nail polish’. Nonetheless, many of these brands explicitly indicate that only some moisture (rather than actual water) reaches the nails [3], which is insufficient for Wudhu/Ghusl. Whilst other brands may claim water does reach the nails, customer reviews differ and are contradictory.

Accordingly, whilst we acknowledge that sisters wish to have a viable alternative to conventional nail polish, it must be emphasised that the issue of Wudhu’ is of great importance and has a direct impact on our Salāh, which is a fundamental aspect of Shari’ah. Hence, caution is vital, especially at the stage where there is a lack of conclusive evidence in this regard. [4]
