Can Zakāt be paid in instalments (monthly) or can it only be paid yearly?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The payment of Zakāt is binding on one’s Zakāt anniversary.  This is the very first date when a person possesses wealth equivalent to the value of Nisab, which heralds the beginning of his/her Zakatable year. It must be noted that this will be based on the Islamic Year (Lunar Year). Generally, to delay paying Zakat without a reasonable and genuine excuse is blameworthy. [1]

However, if you can’t pay immediately, you may pay in instalments by the following Zakāt anniversary (following year). This is due to the fact that sometimes you may wish to give your Zakāt to certain organisations/institutions during the year and also, you may not find worthy Zakāt recipients straight away. Thus, paying via instalments during the year has been deemed permissible by various senior jurists of our Indian Subcontinent such as Mufti Mahmūdul-Hasan Gangohi (d. 1417 AH) and Moulana Yusuf Ludyanwi (d.1421 AH). They have also indicated that one should clear off the outstanding Zakat balance before the passing of the next lunar year. [2]

Finally, one noteworthy point is that if everyone gives Zakāt at the same time eg. in Ramadhān (despite its virtues etc), there is at times somewhat of a loss for the poor and needy because they are deprived throughout the rest of the year. Also, in doing so, some institutes who depend on Zakāt money are also deprived.

جب نصابِ زکاة پر سال گزر گیا تو اس نصاب کی زکاة کی ادائیگی ميں جلدی کرنا بہتر ہے ، اور اگر متفرق طور پر مثلاً سال کے اندر فقراء کو تھوڑا بنیتِ زکاة ديديا جاۓ تو یے بھی درست ہے… وقد یقال: ان لا یؤخر الى العام القابل

بہتر تو یہی ہے کے حساب کر کے زکاة كی رقم الگ کر لی جاۓ ، لیکن اگر تھوڑی تھوڑی کر کے سال بھر ميں ادا کی جاۓ تب بھی زکاة ادا هوجاےۓ گی اور جب سال شروع ہو اسی وقت سے تھوڑی  تھوڑی زکاة پیشگی ادا کرتے رہے تع یہ بھی درست ہے

سال گزرنے کے بعد بھی مہلت ہے کہ حسبِ مواقع وحالات تاخیر سے ادا کر سکتا ہے ، البتہ کوشش کرنی چاہے کے حتی المقدور جلد سے جلد زکاة ادا كردے…اور قسطوں ميں بھی ، لہذا ماہانا ايک سو روپے کے لحاظ سے زکاة ادا كر دينا كافي ہے
