Sending the Placenta for post-mortem

Question(s):
Can we send the placenta for post-mortem? Is it jaiz? They want to know the cause of why it happened and if she needs any medicine they can give her and in future prevent this?

Answer(s):
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, it is preferred that the placenta is buried as soon as possible. Accordingly, a post mortem of the placenta should be avoided, if possible.

According to our understanding, examination of the placenta can be performed without a post-mortem [2]. Thus, this should be adopted where there is a genuine need to assess the possible dangers to the mother or her future children. [3]

“6.3 Examination of the placenta – Many babies die as a consequence of placental disease, and examination of the placenta very often provides useful information after a late miscarriage, stillbirth or a neonatal death (see Section 8). The placenta should be examined whenever possible. Examination of the placenta is especially important if the parents do not want a post mortem (see Section 5.1).”
