Question:
Is it permissible to perform a post-mortem (autopsy) after death in Islam?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The human body is sacred in Islam, both in life and after death. Therefore, performing a post-mortem is generally impermissible. Where possible, alternatives such as MRI or scanning should be used instead. However, if there is a legal requirement or pressing necessity, there is no sin on the family of the deceased.

وقال المرغيناني في الهداية (3/46، دار الفكر): الآدمي مكرم لا مبتذل، فلا يجوز أن يكون شيء من أجزائه مهاناً ومبتذلاً. انتهى

وقال الزيلعي في تبيين الحقائق (4/51، بولاق): الآدمي مكرم، فلا يجوز أن يكون جزؤه مهاناً. انتهى

وقال ابن نجيم في الأشباه والنظائر (ص 76، دار الكتب العلمية): إذا تعارضت مفسدتان، روعي أعظمهما ضرراً بارتكاب أخفهما. انتهى

وقال ابن نجيم أيضاً في الموضع نفسه (ص 75): لو كان أحدهما أعظم ضرراً من الآخر، فإن الأشد يزال بالأخف. انتهى
